"Parents will be able to choose an alternative education for their children under Conservative plans to expand state funding for Montessori and Steiner schools."

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1198371/Tories-fund-alternative-Montessori-Steiner-state-schooling.html

"In Montessori nurseries and primary schools, children are allowed to learn at their own pace and choose what activities to do for as long or short a time as they please."

I don't feel it is a proper representation of the method...It often feels like people think that the Montessori method lets the child decide/choose what he/she wants to do when in fact it's quite the opposite where teachers introduce the child to very specific activities based on their needs.

Thoughts ?

I agree with you. Although I am really happy to see some state funding going towards the Montessori Education, it is sad to see the journalist did do some proper investigation.

"There is less emphasis on a strict curriculum" When you look at 150+ lessons there is on this site alone, I think the method is much more developed than the traditional methods mentioned in the article.

Still happy for the funding.

Thanks for sharing

Thanks for the link

It does seem like people who are unfamiliar with Montessori jump to conclusions:
Montessori = un-traditional = not really serious = only for kids that fail in the traditional system

Sad

I was visiting a class a few months ago and was so amazed to see 5 year old Montessori Children working on fractions. Pretty impressive
