Hi all,

I am trying to convince a friend of mine to move her kid from a traditional environment to a Montessori Environment...I went through a few points with her:
- Multi Age Classroom which, among many things empowers older children
- Development speed different as it's not a 1 to Many type of education
- Big emphasis on senses as opposed to passively receiving information
- On the same note, Montessori Children really learn by doing
- Emphasis on Self Control and Understanding of environment

Those were the first ones that came to my mind. What else would you say make Montessori stand out vs Traditional Schools ?

Here what I would add:
- The Method encourages children to teach and collaborate. Great way to empower as you mentioned
- Self-Discipline as opposed to the teacher setting the discipline (In real life though, children are children and the teacher does need to step in)
- The feeling of success is personal as opposed to the reward/punishment system found in traditional method
- Teacher has a guiding role. If your friend visits a school, she will see the teacher sit next to the child not in front of him/her
- Child chooses own work. The child is not supposed to pick up material he has never been presented to though. It's the role of the teacher to determine when a child is ready to be introduced to new material

I hope it helps.

Great 2006 Study showing how Montessori Education,
Quote:
when strictly implemented, fosters social and academic skills that are equal or superior to those fostered by a pool of other types of schools.

My favorite part:

Quote:
the Montessori children performed better on standardized tests of reading and math, engaged in more positive interaction on the playground, and showed more advanced social cognition and executive control. They also showed more concern for fairness and justice. At the end of elementary school, Montessori children wrote more creative essays with more complex sentence structures, selected more positive responses to social dilemmas, and reported feeling more of a sense of community at their school.
