The Metal Insets help the child:

1/ Correctly hold a pencil
2/ Correctly write with a pencil
3/ Prepare the child for writing

Metal Insets also shows the child how to draw different shapes. To take it a step further, they also work well for an art project or for art work in terms of learning to overlap, shading, cutting, filling in a boarder, etc.
